About the Book

The genomics revolution has made mathematical models and computer programming of genetic processes indispensable aspects of biological knowledge. 'Coding Genetics' helps you to obtain this knowledge. After going over the basics of programming with R, it introduces the dynamics and analysis of population genetics and shows how to write models that describe these systems with R.

The book is thus, on the one hand, a guide to computer programming that will help you develop and analyse models and, on the other hand, a textbook of population genetics. It will help you, whether you would like to learn to program (and to do so with important biological questions rather than with dry principles) or whether you already know some programming, and would like to use your knowledge to learn about one of the fundamental areas of biology: the genetics of populations.

    • Exercises and data sets
These files give a sample R-code for all of the exercises in the book. The file "Exercises.appendix.zip" contains R-scripts for the exercises in the appendix; "Exercises.text.zip" contains scripts for the exercises in the text. Once unzipped, the files can be loaded into R. . The file data.zip contains the data used to detect genetic patterns. They are text-files and can be read with any text editor.

    About the Author

    Jacob C. Koella

Jacob Koella is a professor of evolutionary biology and parasitology at the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland.

With the equivalent of Master's degree in mechanical engineering (specialising in systems dynamics), a Phd in evolutionary ecology and several years experience working on the epidemiology of malaria in Tanzania, he conducts a considerable part of his research on mathematical theory combining the epidemiology and evolutionary ecology of parasites.

He teaches courses on mathematical modelling, parasitology and evolutionary ecology at the University of Neuchatel and at the ETH Zurich.
