Guerra Junqueiro played an extremely important role in Portugal’s cultural scene. He was labelled the “Portuguese Victor Hugo” (*) due to his importance and was considered by many to be the greatest Portuguese social poet of the 19th century.

Some texts are astonishingly relevant today, which only proves that, at the level of intentions and socio-economic practices, in one hundred and forty years human society has not changed at all.
